Why Connecticut Yards Need So Many Walls

Connecticut is not flat. Material Options and Honest Costs

Segmental retaining wall (SRW) block is the workhorse: engineered units that lock together, batter automatically, and come in finishes from clean modern to tumbled fieldstone looks. Installed cost typically runs $40–$100 per face-foot (a face-foot is one square foot of visible wall face) depending on height, access, and drainage scope. Natural fieldstone — the classic New England look — runs higher and shines in shorter garden walls. Timber walls are the budget option and the shortest-lived; ground-contact wood in Connecticut soil is a 15–20 year material on its best day. Poured concrete makes sense for engineered structural situations, usually faced with veneer.

The 3–4 foot line matters: most Connecticut towns require an engineered design and a permit for walls above 3 or 4 feet of retained height — and any wall supporting a driveway, structure, or steep slope deserves engineering regardless of height. Can I replace a failing timber wall with block?

Do small garden walls need all this engineering?
