How an Ice Dam Actually Forms
Snow lands on your roof. Heat leaking from the living space warms the roof deck, melting the snow from underneath — even on a 20°F day. Meltwater runs down the roof until it crosses the eaves, which hang past the heated house and stay cold. There it refreezes. Repeat for a week and the refrozen ridge becomes a dam; the water pooling behind it has nowhere to go but backwards, under the shingles, into the sheathing, insulation, and eventually the ceiling paint bubble that makes you call someone.
That’s why the fix isn’t about ice at all. Icicles at the gutter line are the visible tell that your roof is warm when it shouldn’t be — which is also why your heating bill and your ice dams are the same problem wearing two costumes.
Air Sealing
Attic bypasses — recessed lights, chases, hatch gaps — leak warm air. Sealing them beats adding insulation alone.

Why Capes and Older Colonials Get Hit Hardest
Connecticut’s classic 1940s–70s housing stock is ice dam architecture: story-and-a-half Capes with finished attic rooms mean the roof deck is the ceiling, with a couple inches of ancient insulation between your thermostat and the shingles. Kneewall spaces, cathedral sections, and additions with tricky rooflines all concentrate heat against the deck. If your house grows icicle walls every February while the ranch next door stays clean, this is why — not bad luck.
Mid-winter, dam already formed? Do: rake snow off the lower few feet of roof from the ground, and use calcium chloride socks laid vertically across the dam to melt channels. Don’t: chip ice with a hatchet, pressure-wash a frozen roof, or put rock salt up there. Roofs and gutters lose those fights.
The Permanent Fix Stack
Lasting prevention is layered, in this order of value: air-seal the attic plane (the highest-return step and the most skipped), insulate to R-49+, ventilate soffit-to-ridge so the deck tracks outdoor temperature, and when reroofing time comes, membrane the eaves 3–6 feet past the warm wall line plus valleys. Heated cables are the honest band-aid: legitimate for one stubborn architectural trouble spot, an operating cost and an admission elsewhere.

Will new shingles alone stop ice dams?
No – shingles shed water downhill and dams push it uphill. A reroof helps only when it includes eave membrane, and the dam itself stops when attic heat loss stops.
Are icicles always a warning sign?
Small icicles after a sunny thaw are normal physics. Thick walls of ice at the eaves during cold snaps mean roof-melt from house heat – that’s the red flag.
Does homeowners insurance cover ice dam damage?
Interior water damage from a dam is commonly covered; the preventive work usually isn’t. Document damage with photos before any repairs.
Is roof raking worth doing?
Yes – keeping the lower 3-4 feet clear after heavy snows removes the raw material dams are made of. Ground-based rake only; nobody should be on a snowy roof.
